Several unique Haitian art forms have their roots as ceremonial objects in the Vodoun temple. These include sequined bottles and banners as well as pacquettes, small devotional bundles bound with cloth or ribbon and decorated with feathers, sequins, and beads. The exquisite Vodoun banners in the collection are also examples of this temple art. Traditionaly these banners depict the loas, or Vodou spirits, and their symbols. Each banner is hand sewn with beads and sequins creating shimmering images, designs and patterns on a fabric backing. A single banner is typically made up of about 20,000 sequins sewn down with an equal number of tiny beads. A border and backing is added to finish the piece. A skilled Haitian artist can produce a single banner in about ten days.
