Metal is another common medium among Haitian artists. Haitian metal art can be traced to the work of artist George Liautaud who was employed as a blacksmith maintaining the railroad systems for the Haitian-American Sugar Company. Utilizing his metalworking skills, Liautaud began to forge elaborate cemetery crosses and metal sculptures in zoomorphic forms. Inspired by his work, other Haitian artists began working in metal, many of them creating their own sculptures from discarded oil barrels which were readily available to them.
