Walter Haskell Hinton
May 23 – August 23, 2018
Law-Reddington Galleries

Painter and illustrator Walter Haskell Hinton (1886-1980) produced magazine covers and advertisements for numerous companies during his career. In 1926, he began a long-running working relationship with John Deere & Company completing a wide variety of commissions for the firm. Hinton’s work with John Deere & Company was iconic during the Depression era, illustrating ideal scenes of farm life filled with promise and possibility while masterfully introducing the John Deere tractor into the rural landscape. Over the years, Hinton created a collection of illustrations which serves as a window into the 1930’s and a visual narrative of the ascending role of John Deere Tractor in rural life at that time.

This exhibition is planned in partnership with the John Deere Tractor & Engine Museum and features 29 original works by Walter Haskell Hinton from the art collection of Deere & Company.

Accompanying the exhibition will be works from the Waterloo Center for the Arts collections which celebrate agriculture and rural life in Iowa and around the world.
