BLAKE SHAW is a composer, bandleader, double bassist and teacher originally from Lisbon, IA. He has earned an Associate of Arts degree from Kirkwood Community College as well as a Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts degree both from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA where he has called home for the past 8 years. The Blake Shaw Quintet is Shaw’s main group that plays his own compositions and arrangements. The style of this group ranges from straight ahead jazz, pop tunes, rock feels and hip grooves thrown together in a mixing pot that showcases each musician’s strengths. Nolan Schroeder (tenor & bassoon) and Ryan Smith (alto and bass clarinet) make up the wind section. Christopher Jensen (drums) and Dan Padley (guitar) can also be found in a plethora of different projects due to their ability to jump into any diverse style of music. This group recorded their first album containing all compositions by Shaw and released it in March of 2016 entitled “Listen Hear” on the Real Town Records label run by Craig Kessler.
