Gallery Talk & Artist Reception September 15, 2022 | 5:30-7:30pm
Join us for a gallery talk and artist reception with artist Erin Anfinson on her works, Tell the Bees, on view now in our Forsberg Riverside galleries.
August 3 – November 6, 2022
In 2021, Iowa native and University of Northern Iowa alumni Erin Anfinson worked as an artist-in-residence at the Tallgrass Prairie Center. Unexpectedly through the course of her residency she found herself visiting Victorian-era township cemeteries. Amongst the elaborately carved and decaying headstones, Anfinson observed descendants of the 0.1% surviving tallgrass prairie plant species, and the biodiversity that depends upon it. The irony of seeking life in a place of death and mourning was too much to ignore. The stories of Iowa’s settlement and the settlers’ Victorian-era cultural norms, decorations and mourning customs seeped its way into her work and informed this new exhibition, Tell the Bees.
Erin Anfinson is a Professor of Art at Middle Tennessee State University where she teaches drawing, design and digital art courses in the foundations program. Her encaustic-infused collages and animated films are often inspired by an interest in science, conservation, natural history and narratives of ecosystems in flux.
